Online Learning at the Greek School of St Paul, Hempstead

Afternoon Greek School students and their parents have shown great enthusiasm to the online
programs that teachers and schools started following after the closures of Greek schools.  As it seems unlikely students will return to their classrooms any time soon, many schools have implemented online teaching methods, which allows teachers to continue to teach the year’s course work, to test students’ comprehension of that work, to promote discussions between students, and to use videos and other resources found online to enhance the virtual classroom experience. Dr Anastasios Koularmani, Director of the Archdiocese Department of Education, is following these developments closely and has called all Greek School principals to a conference call on Monday March 30th to discuss these latest developments

Afternoon Greek School: Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Paul, Hempstead, New York

Exemplary is the work being done at the afternoon School of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Paul in Hempstead, which had it online school ready and active immediately upon the school’s closure. Their program has also been able to fully incorporate even those teachers who may not be as comfortable with new technology through the use of tele‐conferencing, which allows those teachers to spend 20 to 25 minutes with each of their students.

Mary Vlogiantis, the principal of the school told us that their students have not little classtime, and Saturday Day students, who have not even missed one day of lessons. She states that ‘it important in these difficult times that we keep our connection with the students and their parents. It helps bring a sense of normalcy and continues our education program at a very high standard.”

Mrs. Vlogianitis and each of the school’s 11 teachers are able to keep in touch with their students through the video conferencing platform Zoom, where they teach the lesson and the interact with their students, answer their questions, review or do in class homework etc. and in the case where a student may require extra help, additional videos are created to assist them, or tele‐conferences are arranged. Ms. Vlogianitis notes that “the parents have fully embraced our online program. Many parents came into the video conference the first days wanting to say hi and to thank us. They were very happy to be able to see and speak to us. I think this online connection helps everyone feel that they are not alone in this crisis.”

Ms. Vlogianitis observed that ‘’it’s these little things that we can all do at times like these to bring our students, parents and our whole Greek community together. The same technology that had made us all become disconnected and remote from one another, is now helping us come together at this difficult time.”

Because the school’s 25 of March Celebration were canceled, the teachers spoke to their students about the significance and the importance of the Greek Independence and its heroes. The students read poems and sang songs. Mrs. Vlogiaitis said that many parents told the teachers and herself that they were moved to tears and that their hearts were filled with pride.

The Cathedral of Saint Paul afternoon Greek School has over 180 students ranging from pre‐K to 6th grade and Regents classes. Additionally, Mrs. Vlogianitis also overseas conversation classes for children as well as Adult Greek education classes, and its own Greek School dance program.  The school’s educational and cultural activities are not just contained to the classroom. Ms. Vlogianitis advised that last year the students produced and performed the traditional Karagiozi with actual shadow puppets from Greece. During the first Day of Lent “Clean Monday,” the children made and flew their own kites, had a Lenten picnic and even danced. She states that “[w]e try to bring some traditions that we had in Greece to the students here. These are traditions with which we grew up and greatly miss. The children here will never have an opportunity to learn about them, if we do not teach or show them. Ms. Vlogianitis concluded that “it’s our responsibility and we are all very passionate with what we do. “

“The work that is being done out the St Paul Greek School over the past few years is outstanding. We have teacher who have come from Greece and have brought with them a fresh new approach and perspective, and more importantly, they brought with them their love for Greece and its language and have been able to pass it along to the students”, said Nikolas Kontoleon, who is currently serving as Financial Secretary on the Parish Council and is also a parent of a Greek School student. He noted that “our children want to attend Greek school and that is extremely gratifying for us”.

Διδασκαλία εξ αποστάσεως στο σχολείο Αγίου Παύλου Χέμστεντ

Με τεράστιο ενθουσιασμό δείχνουν να ανταποκρίνονται οι μαθητές των Ελληνικών Απογευματινών Σχολείων αλλά και οι γονείς τους στα εξ αποστάσεως μαθήματα που οι δάσκαλοί τους ξεκίνησαν σχεδόν αμέσως μετά το κλείσιμο των σχολείων.

Καθώς, όπως όλα δείχνουν, οι μαθητές θα αργήσουν να επιστρέψουν στα θρανία τους, αρκετά σχολεία έχουν υιοθετήσει την νέα αυτή τακτική που περιλαμβάνει παράδοση μαθημάτων, εξέταση των μαθητών, συζήτηση στην διαδικτυακή τάξη και τη δυνατότητα να παρακολούθησης βίντεο με θέματα σχετικά με τα μαθήματά τους.

Το θέμα απασχολεί έντονα και το Γραφείο Παιδείας της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής, με τον διευθυντή δρα Αναστάσιο Κουλαρμάνη, ο οποίος παρακολουθεί με προσοχή τις εξελίξεις, να καλεί τους διευθυντές των σχολείων σε μια διαδικτυακή συνάντηση τη Δευτέρα 30 Μαρτίου για να ανταλλάξουν απόψεις για το τι μέλλει γενέσθαι.

“Ξέρω ότι όλοι κάνετε τεράστιες προσπάθειες να λειτουργήσουν τα σχολεία έστω και από απόσταση και θεωρώ ότι θα ήταν πολύ καλό για όλους μας, να βρεθούμε κοντά, να ανταλλάξουμε ιδέες και καλές πρακτικές, να στηρίξουμε ο ένας τον άλλο, στο δύσκολο έργο μας να διατηρήσουμε ζωντανή την Ελληνική Παιδεία μέσα σε αυτόν τον εφιάλτη που ζούμε”, επισήμανε σε μήνυμά του στους διευθυντές των σχολείων ο δρ Κουλαρμάνης.  

Απογευματινό Σχολείο Αγίου Παύλου

Χαρακτηριστική είναι η περίπτωση του Ελληνικού Απογευματινού Σχολείου του Καθεδρικού του Αγίου Παύλου στο Χέμπστεντ του Λονγκ Αϊλαντ, όπου το διαδικτυακό σχολείο στήθηκε σχεδόν αμέσως, ενώ δεν λείπουν και οι μεγαλύτερης ηλικίας δάσκαλοι που επιλέγουν να κάνουν το μάθημα τηλεφωνικά αφιερώνοντας 20- 25 λεπτά στον κάθε μαθητή τους !   

“Τα παιδιά του Σαββατιανού σχολείου”, όπως μας ενημέρωσε η διευθύντρια Μαίρη Βλογιανίτη, “δεν έχασαν ούτε ένα μάθημα. Ειδικά σ’ αυτή την κρίσιμη στιγμή, με αυτόν τον τρόπο διατηρείται μια επαφή ανάμεσα στους μαθητές, τους γονείς και τους δασκάλους, δημιουργείται μια αίσθηση κανονικότητας και το πρόγραμμά μας συνεχίζει σε υψηλό επίπεδο”.  

Οι δώδεκα – μαζί με την κ. Βλογιανίτη- δασκάλες του Σχολείου συνομιλούν με τους μαθητές με τη βοήθεια της πλατφόρμας Zoom, παραδίδουν μαθήματα, εργασίες για το σπίτι, εξετάζουν μαθητές και απαντούν σε ερωτήσεις και απορίες τους, ενώ για τις περιπτώσεις όπου θα παρουσιαστεί μια δυσκολία, ετοίμασαν και επεξηγηματικά βίντεο για τα μαθήματά τους ή επικοινωνούν μαζί τους τηλεφωνικά.

“Ειδικά η ανταπόκριση των γονέων είναι φοβερή. Βγήκαν και αυτοί στις οθόνες να μας πουν ένα γεια σας, να μας ευχαριστήσουν, να μας που ότι χαίρονται που μας είδαν και άκουσαν τη φωνή μας”, πρόσθεσε η κ. Βλογιανίτη και αυτό γιατί νιώθουν ότι δεν είναι μόνοι τους με τα παιδιά τους όλη μέρα στο σπίτι, αλλά  υπάρχει και κάποιος άλλος εκεί που ενδιαφέρεται γι’ αυτά. 

“Είναι πολλά μικρά πράγματα που μπορούμε να κάνουμε αυτές τις δύσκολες στιγμές, μπορούμε να φέρουμε πολύ κοντά τους γονείς, την ελληνική κοινότητα. Εχουμε χαθεί όλοι, κλειστήκαμε στα σπίτια μας, αποξενωθήκαμε και όμως αυτό μας έφερε πάλι κοντά με άλλο τρόπο. Δηλαδή αυτή η τεχνολογία που τόσα χρόνια γράφαμε και γράφαμε ότι μας αποξένωσε, ότι εξαιτίας της δεν είμαστε κοντά ο ένας τον άλλο, τώρα μας έφερε κοντά. Ηταν πολύ ωραίο αυτό”, δήλωσε η κ. Βλογιανίτη στη Greek News.

Με αφορμή μάλιστα την εθνική μας επέτειο και τις σχολικές γιορτές που ακυρώθηκαν, οι δάσκαλοι μίλησαν στα παιδιά για την 25η Μαρτίου και τους Αγωνιστές του 1821, τα παιδιά διάβασαν τα ποιήματά τους, είπαν τραγούδια.  “Πολλοί γονείς είπαν ότι τους κάναμε και έκλαψαν. Γέμισε η καρδιά μας περηφάνεια”, είπε.

Το Απογευματινό Σχολείο του Αγίου Παύλου έχει περίπου 180 μαθητές από το προνηπιαγωγείο μέχρι και την 6η τάξη, τάξη Regents, καθώς και Conversation Classes για παιδιά και ενηλίκους, τις οποίες διδάσκει η διευθύντρια Μαίρη Βλογιανίτη. Η ίδια διδάσκει και παραδοσιακούς χορούς.

Οι εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες δεν σταματούν όμως στα θρανία. Πέρυσι ανέβασαν παράσταση του Καραγκιόζη. Την Καθαρά Δευτέρα, όπως είπε η κ. Βλογιανίτη, τα παιδιά έφτιαξαν χαρταετούς και έφαγαν όλα μαζί νηστίσιμα, ενώ χόρεψαν κιόλας. “Προσπαθούμε να φέρουμε στα παιδιά εδώ αυτά με τα οποία εμείς μεγαλώσαμε στην Ελλάδα. Εμάς μας λείπουν, μεγαλώσαμε με αυτά, τα παιδιά δεν τα γνωρίζουν και δεν θα τα μάθουν αν εμείς δεν τους τα δείξουμε. Είναι υποχρέωσή μας. Και όλοι έχουμε πάθος με αυτό που κάνουμε”, πρόσθεσε.

“Είναι φοβερή η δουλειά που έχει γίνει στο Ελληνικό μας σχολείο τα τελευταία 5 με 10 χρόνια στον Αγιο Παύλο. Εχουν έρθει δάσκαλοι από την Ελλάδα και έχουν φέρει έναν άλλο αέρα και πολύ πιο έντονη την αγάπη για την πατρίδα και τη γλώσσα και την έχουν περάσει και στα παιδιά”, είπε στη Greek News ο Νικόλας Κοντολέων, γραμματέας επί των οικονομικών στο κοινοτικό συμβούλιο και πατέρας μαθήτριας του Αγίου Παύλου.

“Σα γονιός σας λέω ότι τα παιδιά μας επιδιώκουν να πάνε στο Ελληνικό σχολείο, τους αρέσει και αυτό μας φέρνει διπλή χαρά”, σημείωσε.
